CreditStatusCheck.co.za (“Credit Status Check”, “we”, “us” or “our”) respects your privacy and is committed to protecting your personal information.
This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, process and share your personal information when you visit CreditStatusCheck.co.za, complete a Credit Status Check assessment, request information or services, or otherwise interact with us.
We process personal information in accordance with applicable South African data protection legislation, including the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (“POPIA”).
By using our website or submitting your information, you acknowledge the processing practices described in this Privacy Policy.
1. About Credit Status Check
CreditStatusCheck.co.za provides consumers with an online financial health assessment designed to help them better understand their current financial circumstances and factors that may affect their financial health or ability to obtain credit.
Credit Status Check is not a credit bureau.
The Financial Health Score, status, Debt Danger Zone, possible decline reasons, positive indicators and other results displayed by Credit Status Check are not official credit bureau scores or credit reports.
Our assessment is generated primarily from the information and answers you provide to us. We use automated rules, algorithms and may use artificial intelligence (“AI”) to analyse this information and generate personalised insights.
The assessment is intended for informational and educational purposes. It should not be interpreted as an official determination of your creditworthiness, financial advice, or a guarantee that a lender, credit provider or other financial institution will approve or decline an application.
Credit providers and other financial institutions may use their own affordability assessments, credit bureau information, internal policies, scoring models and other information when assessing an application.

- directly from you when you complete an assessment or form;
- when you communicate or interact with us;
- automatically when you use our website;
- through cookies and similar technologies;
- from advertising and analytics platforms;
- from service providers acting on our behalf; and
- where permitted by law, from existing records we legitimately hold relating to previous interactions with our services.
Where appropriate, certain information may be pre-populated to make the assessment process easier. You should check that information and correct it if it is no longer accurate.

5. AI and Automated Assessment
Credit Status Check uses automated processing and may use artificial intelligence, algorithms and predefined assessment rules to analyse the information you provide.
The assessment may consider information such as your income range, employment circumstances, debt position, arrears, affordability indicators, housing circumstances and other answers submitted during the assessment.
These systems may be used to generate:
- your Financial Health Score;
- an overall financial health status;
- your Debt Danger Zone or similar indicators;
- positive financial indicators;
- possible reasons why credit applications may be unsuccessful;
- educational guidance;
- personalised observations; and
- information about products or services that may potentially be relevant to you.
These results are estimates and informational assessments based primarily on the information available to our system.
Your Credit Status Check Financial Health Score is not an official credit bureau score.
Unless we expressly state otherwise, we do not obtain or display an official credit bureau score as part of the Credit Status Check assessment.
The Credit Status Check score should therefore not be represented or interpreted as a score issued by a registered credit bureau.
Different lenders and financial service providers use different assessment criteria. Your Credit Status Check result cannot predict or guarantee the outcome of an application.
The Credit Status Check assessment itself does not make a legally binding decision to grant or refuse credit.
6. Accessing Your Assessment Results
After completing an assessment, we may generate a unique, tokenised link that allows you to access your personalised Credit Status Check results.
The link is intended for your use and should not be shared with other people.
Anyone who obtains access to the tokenised link may potentially be able to view the assessment associated with that link during its period of validity. You should therefore treat the link as private.
For privacy and security purposes, the tokenised results link expires 4 days after completion of the assessment.
Once the token has expired, the link can no longer be used to access the assessment results associated with that token.
The expiry of a results link does not necessarily mean that all underlying information associated with the assessment has been deleted from our systems. Our retention of personal information is dealt with separately under the Data Retention section of this Privacy Policy.
7. Product and Service Recommendations
Based on the information you provide, Credit Status Check may identify financial products or services that appear potentially relevant to your circumstances.
These may include products or services such as:
- personal loans;
- debt assistance or debt-related services;
- insurance;
- home finance or related services; and
- other relevant financial products or services.
The display of a product, service, provider or offer does not mean that you have been approved or pre-approved.
Any application or enquiry you make with a third-party provider will be subject to that provider’s own eligibility criteria, affordability assessment, terms and conditions, privacy practices and approval process.
Where you choose to request or express interest in a third-party product or service, we may provide information necessary to facilitate your request to the relevant provider, intermediary or partner.
8. Sharing Your Personal Information
We do not sell your personal information as a standalone consumer database.
We may disclose or provide access to personal information where reasonably necessary to:
- website and hosting providers;
- cloud infrastructure and database providers;
- communications providers;
- email and SMS service providers;
- analytics providers;
- security and fraud-prevention providers;
- technology service providers;
- AI or automated-processing providers used to assist with our assessments or services;
- financial service providers, intermediaries or business partners where you have requested, selected or consented to a relevant product or service;
- professional advisers such as legal, accounting or compliance advisers;
- regulators, law-enforcement agencies, courts or other authorities where required or permitted by law; and
- relevant parties in connection with a legitimate merger, acquisition, restructuring, financing or sale of all or part of our business, subject to applicable legal requirements.
Where third-party service providers process personal information on our behalf, we expect them to use appropriate confidentiality and security safeguards and to process information only for authorised purposes.
9. Marketing Communications and Consent
Completing a Credit Status Check assessment does not, by itself, mean that you have agreed to receive all future marketing communications from us.
Where consent is required for electronic direct marketing, we will request the appropriate consent.
If you choose to consent to marketing, we may use your contact information and relevant information about your interests or circumstances to send you information about products, services and offers that may be relevant to you.
Communications may include email, SMS or other electronic communication channels where permitted.
You may withdraw your marketing consent or unsubscribe from marketing communications at any time.
Marketing emails will ordinarily include an unsubscribe mechanism. Where appropriate, SMS or other communications will provide instructions for opting out.
Withdrawing marketing consent does not necessarily prevent us from sending legitimate service or transactional communications relating to an assessment, enquiry or service that you specifically requested.
10. Service Communications
Where you complete an assessment or request a service from us, we may send communications reasonably necessary to provide that service.
For example, we may send you:
- confirmation that your assessment has been completed
- your assessment results link;
- reminders relating to access to your assessment;
- important security or service information; and
- responses to enquiries you have made.
These communications are different from general promotional marketing communications.
11. South African ID Numbers and Other Identifiers
Certain services may require us to process your South African identity number or other unique identifiers.
We may use this information for purposes including:
- identifying assessment records;
- preventing duplicate submissions;
- matching information relating to a service you requested;
- fraud prevention;
- maintaining data integrity; and
- facilitating relevant financial service requests where applicable.
We recognise the sensitivity and importance of unique identifiers and apply appropriate controls to their processing.
12. Data Security
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures designed to protect personal information against accidental or unlawful loss, destruction, alteration, unauthorised disclosure, access or misuse.
Depending on the circumstances, these measures may include:
- encrypted network connections;
- access controls;
- authentication controls;
- restricted administrative access;
- secure database and cloud infrastructure;
- monitoring and logging;
- tokenised access to assessment results; and
- other technical and organisational safeguards appropriate to the information being processed.
Access to Credit Status Check assessment results is provided through a unique tokenised link with a limited validity period. This is one of the measures we use to reduce the risk of unauthorised access to assessment results.
No internet-based system or method of electronic storage can guarantee absolute security.
You should also take reasonable precautions to protect information and links sent to you, including not sharing your assessment link with people whom you do not want to access your results.
13. Data Retention
We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes for which it was collected or subsequently processed, subject to applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
Retention periods may depend on factors including:
- the nature of the information;
- the service provided;
- operational requirements;
- fraud and duplicate-prevention requirements;
- legal and regulatory obligations;
- dispute resolution;
- consent records;
- security requirements; and
- legitimate record-keeping requirements.
The 4-day expiry of your tokenised assessment link relates specifically to access to your online assessment results.
It does not necessarily mean that all underlying personal information associated with the assessment is automatically deleted after 4 days.
Where personal information is no longer reasonably required, we may delete, destroy, anonymise or de-identify it in accordance with applicable law and our data-retention practices.
14. Cookies and Similar Technologies
CreditStatusCheck.co.za may use cookies, pixels and similar technologies to:
- enable website functionality;
- remember preferences;
- understand how visitors use our website;
- measure website performance;
- detect technical problems;
- measure advertising effectiveness;
- attribute visits or conversions to advertising campaigns; and
- improve our website and services.
Information collected through these technologies may include your IP address, browser type, device type, pages visited, referring source and interactions with our website.
You may be able to manage cookies through your browser settings or consent controls made available on our website.
Disabling certain cookies may affect the operation or functionality of parts of the website.
15. Advertising and Analytics
We may use third-party analytics and advertising services to understand how people use CreditStatusCheck.co.za and to measure and improve our advertising.
These services may process limited device, browser, website interaction, advertising attribution or event information.
Where required by applicable law, such processing will be subject to appropriate consent or another lawful basis.
16. Cross-Border Processing
Some of our technology providers, cloud service providers or other service providers may process or store information outside South Africa.
Where personal information is transferred outside South Africa, we take reasonable steps to ensure that the transfer and processing are handled in accordance with applicable data protection requirements.
17. Your Rights
Subject to POPIA and other applicable laws, you may have the right to:
- ask whether we hold personal information about you;
- request access to personal information we hold about you;
- request correction of inaccurate, incomplete, misleading or outdated personal information;
- request deletion or destruction of personal information where permitted;
- object to certain processing of your personal information;
- withdraw consent where processing relies on your consent;
- object to direct marketing;
- unsubscribe from marketing communications;

- lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator.
We may need to take reasonable steps to verify your identity before providing access to personal information or acting on certain requests.
Some rights are subject to legal limitations, and we may be required or permitted to retain certain information despite a deletion request.
18. Automated Decision-Making
POPIA provides protections in certain circumstances where a decision that has legal consequences or substantially affects a person is based solely on automated processing intended to create a profile of that person.
Credit Status Check uses automated processing to generate informational financial health assessments and recommendations.
The Credit Status Check assessment itself does not approve or decline a credit application, grant credit, determine an official credit bureau score, or make a legally binding lending decision.
Where a third-party lender, credit provider or service provider receives an application or enquiry, that provider is responsible for its own assessment and decision-making processes.
19. Accuracy of Information
The accuracy and usefulness of your Credit Status Check assessment depend substantially on the accuracy of the information you provide.
You are responsible for providing information that is accurate and current to the best of your knowledge.
Because our assessment is based primarily on your answers, incorrect, incomplete or outdated information may produce results that do not accurately reflect your circumstances.
20. Third-Party Websites and Services
Our website and assessment results may contain links to websites, products or services operated by third parties.
If you follow a link to a third-party website or submit information to a third-party provider, that provider may process your information according to its own privacy policy and terms.
Credit Status Check is not responsible for the privacy practices of independently operated third-party websites or services.
We encourage you to review the applicable privacy policies and terms before submitting personal information to a third party.
21. Children’s Personal Information
CreditStatusCheck.co.za and the Credit Status Check assessment are intended for adults.
We do not knowingly provide the Credit Status Check assessment to children or intentionally collect children’s personal information for this purpose.
If we become aware that children’s personal information has been collected in circumstances where we are not lawfully permitted to process it, we may take appropriate steps to remove or otherwise deal with that information.
22. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in:
- our services;
- technology;
- business practices;
- service providers;
- legal or regulatory requirements; or
- the way we process personal information.
The latest version will be published on CreditStatusCheck.co.za and the “Last updated” date will be amended accordingly.
Material changes may also be communicated through other appropriate means where necessary.
23. Contact and Privacy Requests
If you have questions regarding this Privacy Policy or the way we process your personal information, or if you wish to exercise any applicable privacy rights, please contact us using the contact information provided on CreditStatusCheck.co.za.
Please provide sufficient information for us to identify the relevant records and understand your request.
We may require reasonable proof of identity before disclosing, changing or deleting personal information.
24. Complaints to the Information Regulator
If you believe that your personal information has been processed unlawfully, you may have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator of South Africa.
Information about privacy rights, complaints and POPIA is available from the Information Regulator.
25. Important Credit Status Check Disclaimer
For the avoidance of doubt:
CreditStatusCheck.co.za is not a credit bureau and the Credit Status Check Financial Health Score is not an official credit bureau score.
Your assessment is generated primarily from information that you provide and may use automated rules, algorithms and artificial intelligence to analyse that information.
The assessment is intended to provide an indication of your financial health and educational information based on the information available to us.
It does not constitute:
- an official credit report;
- an official credit bureau score;
- financial advice;
- a lending decision;
- pre-approval for credit;
- a guarantee of credit approval; or
- a guarantee that any particular financial institution will assess your circumstances in the same way.
Your actual credit profile, official credit bureau information, affordability assessment and eligibility for financial products may differ from the Credit Status Check assessment.
